Night fell and deep and dark I dived right down Crawling with my snout pressed to the sighing earth How long lingered I under the moon's cold frown How long waited I for the morrow of mirth And I walked the night like a forgotten song Of joy most haunting most exquisite and new I sniffed here and rolled there but ne'er too long On the threshold, where the dark sky turned blue When day broke I found that I was running Here, all except the sugar you have shorn — So autumn leaves and my heart ruddying Tail a-wag, head a-cocked, unassuming I dance to your tune, your mellifluous horn, And give myself up, up, to the zooming.
